Yes, this is not really a living document, but more reference (though those bits generally are still revelant). Looking at your patch, indeed CVS is something less and less known, and CVS vs whatever else wasn't the point, so how about if we go with your proposal and just write "[version control]", i.e., with the angle brackets commonly used in quotes to indicate when something is not verbatim, but adjusted for context?
