Hi Charls.
I wouldn't say "challenge" is the only criterion, nor is it just! challenge,
rather it is the entire design aspect of a game.
it's rather like cookery. if three chefs offered me steak and chips, chinese
food or pasta, I'd probably generally go for the chinese since I know myself
that the other two can be pretty pedestrian if done badly, and on a general
preference scale of equal quality dishes I'd probably prefer chinese.
However, if I had the opportunity to try all three, it is entirely possible
that the chef cooking either the steak or the pasta was an amazingly good
chef, and did a particularly astounding job.
The same goes with games. I am not interested in sport or racing, however I
am aware of the fact that if! a sports or racing game is sufficiently well
designed in it's mechanics and it's appeal to the player to do more than hit
a button at the right time, I would! find it engaging, as in fact was the
case with rail racer.
It's a matter of being open minded and distinguishing an over all good
design from individual preferences in different types of design, -----
rather the way that even though i do not myself enjoy jaz there are many jaz
musicians who I'd regard as exceptionally good musicians if I heard them.
This is of course totally apart from the fact that I generally have! to play
games in order to write convincing and detailed descriptions of them for
audiogames.net :D.
Beware the Grue!
Dark.
