I'm afraid I gave up with the hole colossal cave, as I said the illogical puzzles just became frustrating quite quickly.

however, this site might be useful:
http://www.rickadams.org/adventure/index.html

It's pretty much got everything related to colossal cave. Also though make sure your guide is for the right version, since I think the game has been expanded, and certainly when it was converted into the tads if language the parza was improved from the 1977 original.

hth.

all the best,

Dark.

Thanks Phil for your explanation of game designing. I thought that I could
just purchase the kit and after a bit of learning and fiddling, program a
game. I don't think that I will be doing that any time soon. But the idea is
something to think about. I might try it in the future. So, to sum up, I
can't just purchase the kit and build a game, right?

Hi Paulette,

Well, developing a game requires several different skills and goes through
several stages of development beyond just programming. Here is a basic
outline of the process.

1. You have an idea for a game. You start by writing a back story for the
game, flush out the principle characters, and essentially figure out what
your game will be about.

2. You put your ideas into an outline. You describe each level in detail,
what traps, characters, puzzles, the layout of your level, etc into notes
you'll be referring to when programming.

3. You program the game in a special language called a programming language
such as C++, C# .NET, Python, Java, or use a special toolkit like BGT to
develop the game.

4. Once you have written the game in what we call source code you need to
compile it into an executable that the computer can execute or run.
This requires a tool called a compiler. What compiler you use largely
depends on operating system, programming language, etc.

5. Finally, once your game is ready you need to build a setup program to
redistribute and install your game.

Of course, the above is just a bare bones outline of the steps involved.
A more realistic explanation would have you spend a year or two in training.
Programming languages aren't especially easy for everyone to learn and use
and it is a process of starting out very simple with a game like Guess the
Number and slowly developing more complex apps and programs as your skills
grow. Plus you are going to need to purchase sounds, music, development
tools, etc which will take a financial investment from you to get the basics
for your game to begin with.
Depending on what sort of game it is it also happens to be very helpful if
you have a good head for mathematics, physics, etc as that often is a big
part of programming any kind of realism into a game.

Cheers!

Hi all,

Could someone please tell me what is involved in writing, making or
composing, whatever you call it, a game? The idea of doing it sounds
intriguing.
