Hi Nicol,
That is a very interesting idea. Although, I don't think it would work 
well for SOD. In level 1 there isn't always a need to know what is being 
picked up in higher levels sometime it is a matter of life and death.
For example, say in area 3. There are two rooms on the level heavily 
filled with monsters. Well, if you run low on ammo you need to hurry up 
and find another ammo pack so you can kill them before they kill you.
So in that way knowing what you are near is good. I don't care about 
data wafers or anything else at that moment. All I want is armer and 
ammo, and weapons in a fire fight. I can go back and find the rest after 
it is over.
However, I can certainly see in some games where finding something 
mysterious would be cool as long as you can do it without being shot at.
