+1 for plain old nntp, with a digest option added too, as Lucio suggested.

Gratuitous rambling: One source of resistance to email-based groups among
today's y00fh may be lack of experience with (and the slow disappearance of)
the convention of composing decently formatted emails in a text editor.
(Which in turn imposes the terribly inconvenient requirements of, y'know,
manually inserting line breaks, indenting and outdenting properly to maintain
context, and other nasty stuff).

Curious if anyone agrees or has similar musings.
