Well, the sage people make it easy to install FriCAS via "sage -i fricas'. That's the good thing. The bad thing is that they choose to build it on ecl. Well, it's a natural choice for them, since they also use ecl for Maxima. I am not aware of an option to select sbcl when installing FriCAS that way. I am also not aware of an option to switch of the FriCAS that was installed via "-i fricas" and use a FriCAS that was installed otherwise. I guess you should ask on sage-devel how to do it properly.
But not using 'sage -i fricas' and installing sbcl-fricas yourself definitely works.
What I meant in my previous mail is that I have no idea whether using ecl-fricas is more tightly connected to sage. When you use sbcl-fricas, communication between fricas and sage goes essentially via strings.
