Hi Knut,

That's a good question.  Anatomically striate cortex is located in the
occipital lobe and is identified by a stripe of white matter that runs
through the center of it.  While this stripe is visible by the naked eye in
gross specimens it is not well visualized on most 1.0 mm isotropic images.
Bruce is correct, the ex vivo images Bruce has been generating would be the
best way to identify striate from extrastriate.

I would say that the "best" operational definition based on our labels
would be paracalcarine as V1 (striate) and then cuneus as extrastriate
(perhaps also adding superior aspects of lingual region.  On the lateral
surface it is much harder.  V1 would be considered the occipital pole and
V2 etc rings around the pole.
