Jon,

I tested this by completely removing XQuartz from my machine (which 
deletes /usr/X11/lib/libX11.6.dylib). I then ran freesurfer and got the 
same error as you.

I then reinstalled XQuartz, which restored the 
/usr/X11/lib/libX11.6.dylib file, reran freesurfer, and everything 
worked fine.

So are you sure you installed XQuartz? Perhaps there was a permissions 
issue during installation? After installing XQuartz you should have an 
/opt/X11 folder and a /usr/X11 symbolic link that points to /opt/X11... 
Does you system have both of those?
