I think so. I know that many have done it this way. My experimentation 
with this is that you can miss a lot of activation (unless you have 
smoothed a lot). If you are only using it for visualization, it is not 
probably not going to kill you as long as it shows the stuff from the 
volume that you want it to show. But it is bad practice to use it to 
perform further analysis (as in this case).
