what OS are you using?  and can you give me the results of running this?

cd $FREESURFER_HOME/bin
ldd ./freeview.bin


freeview should be linking against a static jpeg lib, so i dont why it
is trying to use a shared one (it doesnt in our center installation of
freeview).
