Is there a reason why you don't want to use the talairach.xfm?
MNI mritotal does a reasonable job when the image is a good T1 volume.

Making mri_fill work is best done by using the talairach.xfm.

The subject's brain has not been transformed to talairach space. The logs say talairach.xfm not found (ignored). I input "volume indices" for the cutting planes. Am I doing anything wrong?
