Does changing to 40 columns just use half the screen, or does it make
the font larger to accommodate?
If the latter, it might be a way to make the font larger.
It typically switches to 320 pixel column mode, which
means with 8x8 font you get 40x25 characters if you
use 200 pixel rows. From there, you could switch to
larger fonts for even fewer characters on screen ;-)
However, it might also switch to 320x400 or 320x350.
