I have the same Compaq laptop, but sadly is not working anymore, but looking the motherboard it has 2 chips for pcmcia, the VLSI VL82C146, a quick google search shows me that the AST ASCENTIA 900N uses the same chip, here more details https://minuszerodegrees.net/manuals/AST/Bulletins/Technical%20bulletins/AST_TB_0963.TXT https://sandyflat.net/digerati/ast486/drivers/p-other/index.htm Hope it helps

What I really would like to have is a CF Card via PCMCIA adapter acting as additional hard disk, or even 2, I have two PCMCIA slots. This is working with Windows 95, so the hardware is not the problem. But whatever I try, I don't get this running for Freedos (can't try within Win 3.1 as for example cardsoft requires extended mode for that). Really tried a lot - actually cardsoft is kind of working to a certain extent, so it beeps when connecting the card, but cardinfo.exe is giving back only ???.Also atainit is stopping with error. I'm trying cardsoft 3.1 can't find a higher version.Any hint what I'm doing wrong here would be super helpful, thanks for reading !
