As you are aware, we have provided a version of the FreeDOS install media as a
drive image for USB Sticks for some time. While this is technically FreeDOS on
USB, it is configured to be an installation source and not as a portable
version of FreeDOS. But, this is extremely easy to change. :-)

1) Download the FullUSB version from the FreeDOS Website.
2) Unzip the download.
3) Write the IMG file to your USB Flash Drive. I prefer using “dd” on Linux.
4) Optional… Use a tool like GParted to grow the partition on the USB Stick to
use more space.

5) Boot the FreeDOS USB Install Media.
6) Quit the Primary FreeDOS installer.

7) Change to the FDOS-x86 directory. (This is a copy of the FreeDOS Floppy
Edition that is provided on the USB Media.)
8) Run SETUP.BAT
9) When prompted to back up the existing version of DOS on Drive C:, you can
say No.
10) Complete the install and reboot.
11) Delete the SETUP.BAT in the C:\ directory. (It will no longer work)

All Done.
You now have a portable version of FreeDOS on a USB Stick.

Additionally:

You can now use LABEL to rename the drive.
You could delete the FDOS-x86 (Floppy Edition) to free up some space.
You can use FDIMPLES to install additional packages.
You can delete the PACKAGES directory when everything you want is installed to
free a lot more space.

Perhaps someone should create a pretty more detailed version of this
information and add it to the FreeDOS GitLab Documents project at:
https://gitlab.com/FreeDOS/docs <https://gitlab.com/FreeDOS/docs>

:-)
