MODE might be able to suggest to a partner 'I am ready to receive'.
there is no such thing ( for MODE) as 'ignore status lines. send
anyway.'

   ECHO TEST>COM1

will only do something if DTR/CTS7whatever are in proper state.

even worse (it is Eric Auer in the copyright of the serial part of
MODE). problem with quality control :-((((

I would suggest to not let non-TTL levels (+12 Volts) to hit TTL
inputs. not vice-versa.
