Maybe you should reread what I wrote previously:

grub> root (hd0,0)
grub> setup (hd0,0)
grub> quit

Grub doesn't need to be on the MBR, and I never put it there. Whether hd0,0, 
hd0,1, hd0,2 or hd0,4 is appropriate of course depends on the partitioning, 
where stage2 lives, and where C: is.
