Following up on my own post about problems running CBIS' version of SHARE: After I posted yesterday I went through a bunch of the previous posts and found Eric's announcement of the kernel update with its VERSION= correction. So I downloaded and installed that.
I had previously also attempted to try CALLVER as a solution for the Incorrect DOS Version error, but I found that CALLVER was not included with the ver 0.9 CD distros (though it was documented in Help). Is it included with the pre 1.0 distros? At any rate, though it looks like CALLVER should largely duplicate the functionality of VERSION= (except that it offers run-with-one-program and change-on-the-fly capability), I downloaded the May 2006 version from Eric's site for testing with this problem. The tests: With HIMEM, EMM386 and VERSION=6.22 loaded: -- SHARE causes an instant reboot -- CALLVER 6.22 and then SHARE causes an instant reboot -- CALLVER 6.22 C:\NET\SHARE causes an instant reboot With HIMEM and EMM386 loaded: -- CALLVER 6.22 and then SHARE causes an instant reboot -- CALLVER 6.22 C:\NET\SHARE causes an instant reboot With neither HIMEM or EMM386 loaded, but VERSION=6.22 loaded: -- SHARE locks the machine hard (requires a hard reset) With neither HIMEM or EMM386 loaded: -- CALLVER 6.22 C:\NET\SHARE.EXE locks the machine hard With HIMEM loaded, EMM386 not loaded, VERSION=6.22 loaded: -- In one case SHARE locks the machine hard. In another case HIMEM refuses to load after VERSION is executed, reporting "No supported A20 method detected. Unable to switch A20 address line. Driver won't be installed." With HIMEM loaded, EMM386 not loaded: -- CALLVER 6.22 C:\NET\SHARE.EXE locks the machine hard To recap a couple facts mentioned in yesterday's post: This concerns the version of SHARE installed by CBIS Desk-To-Desk small network software. Perhaps I could use FreeDOS SHARE instead, but CBIS NPS.EXE is also generating an "Incorrect DOS version" error, and NPS is hard to troubleshoot with because it requires that other network components be loaded. All of these CBIS components work fine with MS-DOS 6.22. I have temporarily posted this version of SHARE.EXE at http://www.prpcompany.com/SHARE.EXE --John Hupp ----- Original Message ----- From: John Hupp To: freedos-user@lists.sourceforge.net Sent: Thursday, August 17, 2006 7:50 PM Subject: [Freedos-user] "Incorrect DOS version" even with Version=6.22 On a pure FreeDOS machine (Pentium 133, 24MB) running: KERNEL.SYS - 1.1.35 Build 2036, 2006-05-24 COMMAND.COM - 0.84-pre XMS_Swap, 2006-05-21 HIMEM/EMM386 bundled download version 2.08 We are having trouble running a couple old networking EXE's under FreeDOS that run fine under MS-DOS 6.22. They generate "Incorrect DOS version" error messages, even if you use VERSION=6.22 (or 6.2 or 6.0 or 5.0) in CONFIG.SYS. To demonstrate the problem I have attached SHARE.EXE (with final E changed to an underscore). This is not FreeDOS SHARE but the version from CBIS Desk-To-Desk small network software. The network may support the use of FreeDOS SHARE, but when you run the next network command (NPS.EXE) in the network batch startup file, it generates the same error message, and you will not be able to troubleshoot the problem with NPS.EXE because it requires that the CBIS NetBIOS driver, redirector and SHARE all be loaded before it. So if we solve the problem with SHARE then we probably solve it for any other files generating the same error. I know that many updates have been developed since I was last current a couple months ago. Perhaps one of these will solve the problem. I hope one of you will recognize the issue right away! --John Hupp ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Using Tomcat but need to do more?
