Okay, final progress report for a while. I installed new DOS sound drivers on the old machine. After the installation I was able to successfully run the xcom game. Yeaa! One time. Then it failed again under all memory manager versions and no memory manager scenarios.
As before, this points to either a failure or incompatibility with FreeDOS itself, or a bug in the game. Because the game did work once after copying a lot of files and running various setup/sound check programs, indications are xcom is referring to a particular memory address being set to a value that it is not normally set to under FreeDOS. Whether that address is valid and should be expected to be that value is difficult to say: if it is, then FreeDOS needs correction, if not, then the game has an error.
Unfortunately, xcom will not run under one of my debuggers (TD) and DOS/4GW Pro locks out the second debugger (386SWAT) from the exception, so it is hard to research further detail on where the failure is.
I suppose if one were desperate to play under FreeDOS, they could take heart from the fact that the game did run successfully one time out of about a hundred tries. Not heartened by that news? Well, no, me neither.
If I figure out a way to figure out a way to find anything more, I'll let you know.
