I'm running FreeDOS beta9 [service release #1] with the HIMEM XMS memory driver under Virtual PC 7.01 on a Mac mini. I'm not using EMM386, since I need to use VPC's shared folders feature. I am sharing a Mac network shared folder which is an NTFS volume on an NT 4.0 server.
filesystem on a remote server doesn't matter. Can be FAT/NTFS/Ext2 etc etc.
Usually SMB is used for accessing network shares. Samba on Linux does this, and Windows can do it out of its own.
Also compatible with that is a "Microsoft Client for WindowsNT4" diskset which allows you to access these SMB shares (unless encrypted).
When I run 'dir', I get question marks [????] instead of file names and the volume name. That's why I figured I needed NTFSDOS, so I could read the directory and be able to run the DOS program. However, NTFSDOS does not recognize any drives. Is this a deeper issue within FreeDOS, or something in NTFSDOS that I need to figure out? I am running VPC's fshare.exe in order for FreeDOS to see my Mac's SMB network shares, and I am able to 'cd' into those drives just fine. I just can't read the directory, so I haven't tried actually running a program that lives in one of those drives.
I don't know how a Mac's shared folders work.
You might try to download a bootdisk from http://www.veder.com/nwdsk/index.html
and see if it properly enables you to access the Mac mini.
