eric asked about software licenses, all those softwares are
gpl (and they aren't on freedos software lists)

partition saving is like norton ghost
link: http://www.partition-saving.com/
license: gpl

This isn't really a general-user utility, so I hesitate to add it to the FreeDOS Software List. Plus, I don't understand where it says SavePart is GNU GPL. The download doesn't include any source code (required, under the GNU GPL) and there is no GNU GPL license file. I think you may have misunderstood "free software" (as in no cost) with "Free software" (as in "software libre").

arachne is a web-browser link: http://www.cisnet.com/glennmcc/ar183gpl/ license: gpl

Mentioned in my other email, it is already included in the software list.

mpxplay is like winamp (or xmms for linux) link: http://mpxplay.cjb.net/ license: gpl

Florian mentions this on the mailing list from time to time, and it wasn't until recently that I took a peek at it. This is very impressive software, it is GNU GPL, so I've added it to the software list. I've also made a news post about it on the web site. Nice!

upx is a well know executable packer link: http://upx.sourceforge.net/ license: gpl

Not a general-user utility, but it is GNU GPL and very likely useful to most FreeDOS developers. I've added to the list under "Devel".

testdisk is a Tool to check and undelete partition link: http://www.cgsecurity.org/index.html?testdisk.html license: gpl

Yes, this is GNU GPL, but this seems to be a recovery tool, not something that is appropriate for most users. While this would be a useful tool to add to any PC technician's software list, I don't know that it needs to be on the FreeDOS software list.

ltools make linux partitions visible to freedos link: http://www.it.fht-esslingen.de/~zimmerma/software/ltools.html license: gpl

Again, not sure that this is something that general users will need to have. Probably something you'd like to use if you actually boot FreeDOS on its own partition in a dual- or multi-boot configuration (as opposed to running FreeDOS within DOSemu or VMWare) and you need to access your Linux files from DOS. But not something that most users will need to have on FreeDOS, so I'm not sure this needs to be added to the FreeDOS software list. We don't include NTFSDOS3, for example.

biew - binary view, a viewer of binary files with built-in editor in binary, hexadecimal and disassembler modes link: http://biew.sourceforge.net/ license: gpl

Again, not sure that this is something that most users will need, or want to have. At this time, we don't have it on the FreeDOS software list. I'd prefer not to include extra software that doesn't _need_ to be on the list, at least until we get to "FreeDOS 1.0".

syslinux, uh, no words to describe this software :) link: http://syslinux.zytor.com/ license: gpl

We already use this for the FreeDOS boot CD, but we don't include it on the FreeDOS software list because people generally don't need to make their own boot CDs. Those that do, probably already know about SYSLINUX.

free pascal, freepascal is a pascal compiler link: http://www.freepascal.org/ license: gpl

I'm open to adding software to the FreeDOS software list, but I don't know about Pascal. I'm just not a Pascal programmer. Plus, we tried to limit the programming languages in "Devel" to just C, Assembly, and BASIC. (We included BASIC because MS-DOS always included a BASIC environment, but it seemed silly to put BASIC in "Base" and all other compilers/debuggers in "Devel", so BASIC now is in "Devel".) At one time, we were more open to adding new programming languages to the "Devel" section, but then we had all these C-like variants, Modula2, .... - but very few people used those other languages. So we started to limit what programming languages appeared in the "Devel" section.

But if enough people out there think they would make use of FreePascal, I'll go ahead and add it. I just don't want to add a programming language that only 1% of the FreeDOS people will actually use.
