That was the issue. The boot order was hdd before cd and since the mbr was filled it just defaulted to the disk. Thanks for the help.

yes. Boot from cdrom again, and you will be able to format the partition
(put a filesystem on it). The MBR is filled (pointing to partition), but
partition has no filesystem yet, no bootsector and no kernel files.
That's why you need to boot from installation medium twice.

probably your bootsequence set to "harddisk, cdrom, diskette" ?
