As the last Canadian patent expires this July, trying to improve that would be a waste of time
I was wrong! As it can be seen from the Canadian Patent Office site, the patent (http://patents1.ic.gc.ca/details?patent_number=1223965&language=EN) expires on 6 June, not 7 July! This leaves the Japanese patent last - it expires on 20 June. So, in exactly 4 months we can use GIFs again! ;-G
