Also, PNG format is better in all aspects and (in most cases) images there should be more compact.But why don't you use GIFs? The Unisys Lempel-Ziv-Welch patent expired 8 months ago (see http://www.unisys.com/about__unisys/lzw)LZW (used in GIF) is still not patent-free.
Of course, but what can one do if Arachne doesn't support it? If we're FreeDOS, we ought to support the only graphical DOS browser, or we won't be taken seriously! A typical reaction will be like this: "Ha! What FreeDOS can it be, when its site requires Windows / Unix / MacOS to browse!"
Maybe you can add support for PNG in arachne then. No license issues there!
