What's the reason, that programs with this DOS extender hangs the pc after exit?
I don't know, but other DOS extenders are incompatible with the kernel, too. This is one of the toughest problems to solve in my opinion.
I can use DOS/4GW and CauseWay without problem. I imagine WDOSX, DOS32 and PMODE also work, since the gross differences in operation aren't that large with respect to DOS. Just so long as you don't load an EMM driver without VCPI support -- which no FreeDOS EMM driver currently has.
The only difference in my system configuration between MS-DOS 7.1 and FreeDOS is the kernel itself. I use UMBPCI+HIRAM+HIMEM. And while the Borland BCC and Walter Bright's SMAKE work with MS-DOS, they don't work with FreeDOS, so I had to patch RTM32.EXE and SMAKE.EXE to work with them in FreeDOS. I did this in the summer, but wrote only the binary byte difference and NOT how I came up to it. Sorry - bad documentation habits. So they now fork for me, but the required kernel fix can't be done because now I don't know what I've actually fixed then (amnesia ;-) What a mess :-(
