Fsf keeps a recommendation list for systems that are NOT GNU/Linux.
We could make it long term strategy to have all parts of
freedos truly free and to qualify Freedos for this list.
I mention this because I believe that freedos could have a lot more
users (and developers) if only we based development on free and
open tools. If we used GCC (a DOS port exists) instead of Watcom then
we could benefit from having an updated tool and recruit from much
larger developer base.
Freedos should be free (hence the name right ?)
And I believe that this would be death knell for FreeDOS. GCC is a
Linux/Unix tool, totally oblivious to the world of DOS. Yes, there are a
couple of "DOS ports" of GCC but all that they are good for is to
compile *ix originating tools for DOS.
DOS predates all the FSF fluff, and while having the source and being
able to make modification if fine, the visions of people like Stallman
are unfortnately more idealistic than realistic...
You won't get a larger developer base, because there are very few people
left these days that are still interested in developing for DOS, not
making it a second coming of Linux...
