One guy did email us about a year and a half ago about this, but
nothing ever came of it. I'm not aware of any further contact. So
apparently they didn't find what they wanted or didn't want our help
anyways.

I think it's (almost) a lost cause. We don't have enough volunteers to
fix the fixable stuff (presumably switch from OpenWatcom to GCC), and
of course there are many things beyond our control. (For instance, I
have no idea if RMS still thinks of proprietary BIOS as necessary
firmware or not.)

DOS is pretty much "no man's land". It's not Windows (and certainly
they dropped most support), and it's certainly not POSIX (although we
have tons of DJGPP ports plus things like DOSEMU). So, overall, nobody
cares (except us few).

Luckily, despite all of this, FreeDOS works extremely well, even if
most people don't have the imagination to dream what to do with it.
There's still tons of legacy software that outweighs any present
inactivity. So please don't think I'm being overly pessimistic, I
still enjoy FreeDOS.

But it's impossible to please some people. If FreeDOS isn't "good
enough" for "something" by now, then it's never going to be.
