I have that exact issue on an X301 after upgrading from 9.0 to 9-STABLE a little while ago. It feels like it happens mostly when rebooting from Windows to FreeBSD (dualboot machine), but I've seen it from a cold boot as well. I've never seen it twice in a row - turning the machine off and on again (by holding the power button down) and it boots normally the next time.
