Hello, I've not really followed this message but I ran (nearly) into the same problem. I also need latex! But I don't want to use tetex because I am used to texlive. So, I downloaded the texlive ISO Image and installed it with the included script:
http://www.tug.org/texlive/acquire-iso.html The installation works fine (my desktop pc, FreeBSD 8.1, AMD64) and I am able to use all tex features (pdflatex, ...)
