So the next question is how do I approach Dell to replace the motherboard/cpu/memory? If I show them FreeBSD they'll laugh.

Can you find an intensive program to run under Windows that will reproduce it? Hell ... just install ActivePerl and write a perl script that does lots and lots of number crunching (it need not be anything useful) or install SETI and see if it crashes Windows.
