Isn't that the right answer to all such questions?
Although ideal to use FreeBSD/OS X, many circumstances force people
to use Windows (for now..).
Another possible solution (since Tim brought up Windows -> BSD):
automount with mount_smbfs should do the trick. Just having the Unix
server run Samba would do the trick though.
