That's a well-known problem. It can be worked around by setting
MOZ_DISABLE_IMAGE_OPTIMIZE=1 in the environment before starting

It isn't even specific to FreeBSD.

Thanks for the heads up. In fact I've set gfx.xrender.enabled to false
as suggested elsewhere and that works.
