If all you want to know is what ports need updating, portmaster has an option for that. There is also an alias to abbreviate the output in the man page.

pkg_version is somewhat faster.  On my system (seconds):

portmaster -L | filters: 32.53
pkg_version -vl'<':      23.99

And, for a malus versus citrus comparison with hidden overhead:

portversion -vl'<':       7.32
