(This is from memory, can't double-check right now.)
I believe I've seen this, too; and the problem was that when gifs are
brought up, no route to loopback is added for the local address. (This
loopback route gets added for "real" interfaces.) Try adding it manually?
This may already be fixed in a more recent KAME release (FreeBSD's is
kinda stale.)
