I fully agree with Nick. Being able to create gifs dynamically would be a
big win for us (http://www.isi.edu/xbone/).
The old CAIRN distribution of FreeBSD had iti tunnels which you could
create or delete by setting a sysctl controlling how many tunnel devices
there were. Something like that, or the MAKEDEV way, would be great.
