OK, I give up. With -STABLE cvsup last night, it probes every time without 
any extra delay. Presumably some timing has changed somewhere. I hate 
problems that just go away.

BTW, the card seems rock solid in hostap mode. Now all I need to do is 
figure out how to get appletalk to route across this box...
