It's unfortunate that one of the files in the nss package is called mpi.h. But it's just a name collision for one file and it has nothing to do with MPICH (or openMPI for that matter). It's perfectly safe to fix as proposed. In poudriere it will result in exactly the same code, so a new PORTREVISION is not even needed.
