-CURRENT use gcc 3.2.1, which has support for pentium[2,3,4] and athlon[tbird,xp,mp,4] 
architectures.   2.95 which is
the compiler used in -STABLE only has i386 to i686, so can't produce
code directly supporting the newer architectures.
