Yes, there is a lot of evilness in the asr driver. A whole lot. The original author does not have time/desire to maintain it, so obrien volunteered to take over maintainership. I suspect that real life (or a different cool project, like sparc64) has intruded on his plans to do so, and I don't really blame him =-). I give my blessing to anyone who is brave/stupid enough to want to touch this driver.
