Hmmm.  You may have an embarassing point here; I was wondering how/if
the native compiler got used during the build process if you commented
it out of the make world, but nothing I could *obviously* see suggested
that any magic like this was happening.  If I have missed the obvious
somewhere, mea culpa - I'll add some -v's to my CFLAGS and see what sort
of compiler version output I get!
