Did following checks:

booted from 12 release iso, OK ls disk0a:boot did gave an error.

booted from FreeBSD-12.0-STABLE-amd64-20181226-r342545-disc1.iso - no error
from ls.
booted from FreeBSD-13.0-CURRENT-amd64-20190103-r342707-disc1.iso - no error
from ls.

So we have fix in 12 stable. I think it likely is this fix:
https://svnweb.freebsd.org/base?view=revision&revision=340240 but I have not
verified it.
