In their FAQ they only talk about Delphi XE3 and C++ builder... also they mention in "Does it work with other IDEs?" "No, it doesn't"...
find attached a screen shot with firedac installed on lazarus 1.1 this is just to make my point that the current release works with lazarus at the same time take a look at http://blog.marcocantu.com/blog/firedac_announced.html and read on the comments for instructions on how to install it on DX2 along with the warning of no future support.
That being said I wouldn't spend a single minute more on firedac it has already chosen a path that I can not follow and I wouldn't recommend it to any one, for all intents and purposes I agree with you it is a waste of time.
