I'm using Gmail (forced to plain/text) for years.... I do remember when using other mailers that I often saw the TAB character being inserted into the subject line. Gmail was hiding that fact as it only shows the top level subject. I think that was because the subject went over 65 characters, or something like that. I can't remember who was to blame for the inserting of TAB characters.
