It's not true that none of them can be used without all others. And afaik the 
main reason for the split is because of dependencies. They don't want to force 
everyone to install firebird, mysql, postgresql, ptcgraph, gtk, gtk2, qt and 
every other single thing for which FPC has bindings. On the other hand, they 
want to ensure that when someone installs those FPC bindings, that the package 
these bindings are for also gets installed.
