I've seen exactly similar and it has been due to other processes running on the same computer, grabbing CPU or interfering with disk writes to the work file and causing corruption in the scan. Unfortunately I can't now remember the exact circumstances when Vuescan used to do it, but that is where you should be looking IMO. Try (a)making sure you have plenty of empty, contiguous disk space (b)removing any other running programs. Try running MSConfig.exe to stop startup progs and services. Wintop will show you all active threads.
