I find the mask (film base) on XP2 varies substantially (in both density and
tint) depending on who develops it, so I wouldn't be surprised if the orange
base does on colour.

I can't say for certain, but my gut (and
my eyes) disagree with you. Plus, I have
heard this from others.
It might be that the processing affects
the color balance in some mannner, which
I simply attributed to a change in the
orange mask.
I'd be curious to hear other folks'
experiences and thoughts on this.
