Not everybody in the project does, or even can, participate in IRC discussions. And while these discussions are archived, they are not adapted for reading afterward, they are not curated by their authors like mails. Therefore, please remember that IRC discussions cannot be considered consensus. You can of course discuss things on IRC, but before calling their result consensus, somebody needs to summarize the arguments to bring them on the mailing-list and let them be discussed here.
