Stop being a caricature. The goal was to be ABI-compatible with the fork. Considering the hostile stance of the fork at the time, this was not an easy task, obviously, and causes a lot of drawbacks for developers, but it also meant that users could just drop the FFmpeg libraries in /usr/local on their Debian or Gentoo and have them replace the system's libav libraries for the better. Convenience for the users has always been a major goal. It is pretty easy for you to say, in hindsight, that it was useless, but it is also very insulting for the people who were involved in the project at the time. Regards, -- Nicolas George
