"the most simple and elegant solution is usually the best" suggests
that this isn't going to be improved.
FEC requires tons of heuristics to work in the real world.

I don't blame the OP, because FEC looks super simple and you can write
a toy implementation but making it work in the real world (academia vs
engineering) is exponentially harder.
