Colenso) CETSHWAYO'S DUTCHMAN Longmans, Green, & Co. 1880 Being The Private Journal Of A White Trader In Zululand During The British Invasion. Translated from the Dutch And Edited With Preface And Notes by Right Rev. J.W. Colenso D.D. Bishop Of Natal. Cornelius Vijn was a young Hollander aged 23 who had been trading in Natal for more than 4 years. He personally handed his journal to Rev. John Colenso (Bishop of Natal) for consideration of publication in England at the time. More than half of this book is devoted to Bishop Colenso's Notes and, as well known, he was strongly against this war. Also includes notes on 'The Zulu Military System and 'A Protest Against The Zulu War' submitted by the Aborigines' Protection Society. Grace Msimang was the eldest of three daughters of Isaiah Bud Mbelle, a former secretary of the SA Native National Congress (SANNC) and a prominent court interpreter in Kimberley and later in Pretoria. Grace's husband, Richard Msimang, was one of the first black lawyers in Johannesburg in the early 1900s and a founder member of the SANNC (later the ANC). Grace was a niece of Sol Plaatje and the sister-in-law of journalist and politician H. Selby Msimang. She was born and grew up in Kimberley and later lived in Johannesburg and Pretoria. Excellent provenance, the present owner was a friend of George Pemba and the sketch was commissioned and purchased by him. Sold unframed. Pen and ink sketch on paper.
