Lot 248
#27933 Alan Elsdon. THE TALL ASSASSIN. The Darkest Political
Murders Of The Old South Africa
Publisher: Self 2011

The Tall Assassin tells of a reign of terror marked by several
political murders in one man's zealous quest to combat communism.
For many, General Hendrik van den Bergh was the most feared man in
the old South Africa. He was the head of BOSS, the Bureau of State
Security, and The Tall Assassin tells of his dealings. The book
draws on facts, reconstructing likely scenarios where details were
not obtainable. Van den Bergh, who was responsible for the arrest
of Nelson Mandela, built a formidable intelligence network linking
into MI5, the CIA, Mossad, and French and German intelligence
agencies. According to this book, he may have been involved in the
assassination of H.F. Verwoerd, the death of Nic Diederichs, Steve
Biko's murder, as well as the murder of Anton Lubowski and
Professor Johan Heyns. Two of the most infamous murders in which
this book implicates the general are those of Dr Robert Smit and
his wife in 1977. This murder mystery has never been solved, but
here a compelling explanation is offered for the meaning of the
mysterious words 'RAU TEM' painted on the Smits' kitchen wall.
>From a meeting of minds in an internment camp at Koffiefontein, to
the paranoid sixties, the tumultuous seventies and the Information
Scandal that rocked the National Party establishment, The Tall
Assassin paints a terrifying picture of ideology driving a
regime's agents into a moral free fall.

connection with the above items and the bidding process can be
provided on request - including p&p estimates for overseas clients.

You need to register as a seller to make a bid. Contact us if you
have problems with this.

IMPORTANT: The items are on the auction and no pre-auction offers
will be considered. Items will, if unsold, revert to our previous
listed price and no post-auction offers will be considered. If you
wish to purchase an item at auction-level prices, please bid for
it.

Note: The auction allows 'proxy bids' whereby it judiciously spends up to
your maximum bid to stay just ahead of the other bidders - only as long as
they do not have a proxy bid in excess of yours. If you are the only
bidder then it will not exceed the reserve price until another bidder
enters a higher bid. Speak to us if you are unsure on how to use this
feature.

Note: 'Buyers Premium' is not charged on this auction, which means that
the purchaser is paying the hammer price clear of the surcharge levied by
most other auction houses. Buyers Premium adversely affects the prices bid
to the detriment of the seller.

local SA time). Successful bidding!
